Mandela Washington Fellowships 2024 Application
The U. S. Department of State and IREX are currently looking for academic, professional, and regional experts to evaluate and score applications for the 2024 Mandela Washington Fellowship. This prestigious program has received an overwhelming response over the past seven years, with nearly 300, 000 applications received from 49 Sub-Saharan African countries for only 5, 100 available Fellow slots. Your valuable talents and expertise in assessing this large number of applications would be greatly appreciated!
Responsibilities and Reading Period
As part of the program evaluation process, readers will be tasked with assessing program applicants using predefined guidelines and a scoring rubric. Each reader is expected to review approximately 40 applications. As a token of appreciation for their service, readers may receive a one-time honorarium of $100. It’s important to note that Fellowship Alumni and U. S. Government employees and contractors are ineligible for the honorarium. Additionally, only readers with a U. S. bank account can receive the honorarium as international wire payments cannot be facilitated by the program.
The reading period for the upcoming cycle will start on September 16, 2024. It consists of three distinct reading phases, each lasting around two weeks, from mid-September through early November. Selected readers will be assigned to one of these phases and will be responsible for reviewing approximately 40 applications. Reading and scoring each application typically takes between 10 and 15 minutes. Considering this time frame, the estimated total time commitment for readers is around 10 hours.
Eligibility
The Fellowship is seeking ideal readers who are academics or professionals with expertise in the thematic areas of business, civic engagement, or public management. It is preferable that they have experience working in Africa or knowledge of Sub-Saharan African issues. U. S. Government employees and Fellowship Alumni are eligible to apply; however, please note that they may not receive honoraria as mentioned in the section above.
